Although I will not have time to complete a sweater I designed a pattern for, I thought it would be great to finally include this process that we had been working on for You&I Textiles. I have designed a sweater to be completed with the Icelandic wool that is re-purposed from this vintage sweater.
The red is achieved from madder cooked over a wood fire for twenty minutes and then rinsed in water and vinegar. The fiber was mordanted in alum and luke warm water for three days. I was worried that the alum and vinegar might change the texture of the wool, but it feels just as nice before dying.
